Diabetes Care Management for Caregivers—2012

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease in which blood glucose (sugar) levels are too high. Cells in the body break down glucose in order to provide energy for movement, growth, and repair. The hormone insulin is responsible for regulating glucose levels in the blood. Abnormally high levels of glucose can damage the small and large blood vessels, leading to diabetic blindness, kidney disease, amputations of limbs, stroke, and heart disease.

There are 3 common types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually (but not always) diagnosed in children and young adults. Persons with Type 1 diabetes make no insulin and must take insulin every day. Type 2 diabetes is usually (but not always) diagnosed in adults over the age of 45. In Type 2 diabetes, either the person is not making enough insulin, or the body is resistant to insulin and cannot use it properly. The third type of diabetes, gestational diabetes, occurs during pregnancy. 2—4% of all pregnant women have gestational diabetes.

Preventing Compassion Fatigue with Gary Anderson

Do you spend some week days dreaming about when the work will end? Are your Sunday evenings sometimes consumed with anxiety about what you will face when you return to work Monday morning? In this workshop Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist and Hatha Yoga Teacher Gary Anderson will help you understand the relationship between compassion fatigue “burnout” and stress.

We are most effective in service to clients and patients when we are most present to ourselves. In this workshop simple, practical techniques will be introduced to support us in making healthy choices and functioning at our best. We will use our brains, our hearts, our bodies and our deepest wisdom to come up with the best tools to support us in living healthy, functional lives.

Please bring your sense of humor, curiosity and playfulness. The only “flexibility” required is in your attitude! No yoga experience is needed. You will learn—

  • Simple breath focused meditation
  • How to scan your body for stress symptoms
  • Movement techniques to create physical ease
  • When to take self-care actions and what best actions meet your personal needs
  • You will understand that you are not alone in your desire to live a life free of excess stress and tension!

Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy Practitioner Gary Anderson uses the tools of Phoenix Rising Yoga to reinforce our innate strengths and deepest wisdom. Gary shares his knowledge with compassionate understanding and humor

Healing the Hearts of the Healers

Who knew that when we started our journeys as helpers and healers, and opened our hearts and minds to our clients, that we could and would be changed by our work as much as we are? Our empathy, which makes us fully human and probably led us to this path, can also lead us to imbalance, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and burnout.

This workshop will explore the neurobiology of empathy, and other current research on core psychological concepts, to enhance wellbeing and balance while continuing to facilitate clients’ recovery. Presenter will help participants learn to practice self-assessment, explore ways to ease fatigue even during our session and practice with more joy!
