The Principles of Behavior

The keynote address, “The Principles of Behavior” will be presented by Wendy Selnes. Understanding the principles of behavior change and our role will set the framework for this discussion. Wendy will give an overview of why people behave the way they do. The function of behavior, both positive and negative will also be discussed. The keynote address will set the stage for further discussions in the breakout sessions.

MORNING BREAKOUT SESSIONS

Exploring Cultural Uniqueness with Brian Burcar and Josh Howie
Using a small group activity, this training will allow participants to explore various populations of people and discuss
stereotypes, biases, and how to push beyond those in order to better serve our diverse population.

Navigating the Medical Labyrinth with Mary Hallsten, RN
Planning for, attending and processing medical appointments can be an intimidating experience for anyone. As people with disabilities are encouraged to reach their maximum independence, navigating through this process becomes an even greater challenge for both the individual and their support teams. This training will give insight into how to connect what medical practitioners, people with disabilities as well as their caregivers require for the most effective methods of supporting the independence of individuals.

Traumatic Brain Injury Basics: An Introduction to Brain Injury with Christine Kollman and Brianna Berthelsen
Participants will be able to describe the basic facts about the brain and brain injury. They will be able to develop insight into what it is like to live with a brain injury and how it effects the individual’s functioning.

Behavior Support Plans with Wendy Selnes, M.A. BCBA
Wendy will facilitate the process of assessing the function of any behavior and creating a plan. She emphasizes challenging behaviors as functional and assists the participant in distinguishing between a behavior plan and a behavior program.

AFTERNOON BREAKOUT SESSIONS

Tools and Documentation for Challenging Behavior with Wendy Selnes, M.A. BCBA
Wendy will guide participants in exploring the various tools and documentation that can be utilized to assist
individuals who present challenging behaviors and have limited abilities to express their needs.

Dementia: Its not about the memory with Cindy Sanders, LPN and Jennifer Hurst
Have you ever wondered what a person with dementia experiences? Participants will learn about the process of
dementia using interactive techniques. This fun filled session will include the stages of dementia and some
activities that can be used in working with individuals at any stage of the disease.

Stress and Relaxation with Mary Hallesten, RN
By definition, stress is a pressure, force or strain placed on something. Stress is caused by how we respond to
certain events in our lives, not by the events themselves. In this presentation participants will learn
about common stressors, psychological and physiological reactions to stress as well as ways to manage
stress. Participants will also be guided through a set of relaxation techniques.

Adjustment to a Brain Injury/Role of the Caregiver with Christine Kollman and Brianna Berthelsen
Participants will learn that brain injury not only impacts the person who sustained the injury, but also
all individuals in their lives. Christine will describe what an important role the caregiver plays in
enhancing quality of life and promoting adjustment to life after a brain injury. Participants will also learn
how to best support the individual with brain injury

Supporting People with Asberger's Disorder

Asperger’s Syndrome (AS)is an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) which has a distinct group of neurological patterns characterized by impairment in language, social skills, and communication skills, as well as repetitive or restrictive patterns of thought and behavior. All aspects of life are affected by Asperger’s Syndrome. Even though people with AS have average to superior intelligence, deficits in life management skills, executive functioning, and relationships with others contribute to difficulties living independently and performing well in a job.

This workshop is designed for anyone assisting individuals with AS. You will gain a better understanding of the syndrome by learning about the behavior, language, and social interaction characteristic of AS. You will also learn how to assess the level of support needed and identify strategies and approaches for skills development. Employment and worksite challenges will also be discussed. There will be time devoted to case consultations. You are encouraged to bring questions. Program Directors, direct care staff, job coaches, nurses and social workers will benefit from this workshop.

About the Instructor:

Lisa King obtained her Master’s Degree in Education from the College of William and Mary and has worked with students with disabilities in K12 and post secondary education environments for 20 years. As a Disability Specialist in higher education she has worked extensively with students with Asperger’s and Autism Spectrum Disorders. Lisa is the Director of Higher Education and Autism Spectrum Disorders, Inc., an organization for families, professionals, and colleges that focus on issues regarding students with ASD.
